Your link to safety and crime stats made me curious about those more specific to my country. It turns out I live in a quite rapey murderous part of the country. A bit of investigation reveals its not just ambiguous he said she said but some serious dangerous offenders. I wonder what impact crime rates in city of origin/residence have on the degree of left wing activism people participate in. The conservatives have been in power in my province since 1971. With that government and conservative oversight, the social indicator of violent crime and rape compared to other parts of the country don’t look that great. If what you have been doing for decades has been producing the same results and you are looking for different outcomes, it seems logical to give something else a try. Whether people wanted to go as far as the socialist NDP is hugely up for debate but there was definitely consensus for change and it was really the only viable option to make that happen. Trying to agree on how far the change should be or the best way to achieve the agreed upon desired outcomes, is where the battle of ideology clashes.
I appreciate the way you made reference to the sane lefties. In realities they are lefties like many people are considered right wing. That is the group most closely associated with their values but not necessarily reflective of all their values. The expression “there is more than one way to skin a cat” is just the MO which people use to achieve their goals. Those on the left and right of common goals favour different approaches to achieving those goals.
